It’s not surprising that “Carol” was locked away in Hollywood’s development closet for 15 years. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s scandalous 1952 novel “The Price of Salt,” Todd Haynes’ latest movie is a double whammy by industry standards: it’s headlined by two women, who fall in love with each other.

The film, which stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, arrives at a pivotal, yet paradoxical, time for female-driven stories. There has been a string of hits this year that celebrate female empowerment — from “Insurgent” and “Fifty Shades of Grey” to “Cinderella,” and the upcoming “Trainwreck,” “Spy” and the final installment of “The Hunger Games.” That said, gender inequality both in front of and behind the camera is a hot-button issue in the global entertainment business.

As one of cinema’s most prominent stars, Blanchett, whose recent roles include the evil stepmother in “Cinderella,” doesn’t want Hollywood to wait for Prince Charming to save the day. “We have to push forward,” says the 45-year-old Australian actress, who believes successful women are finally starting to nurture projects for females. “What industry has parity pay for women? None. Why would we expect this industry to be any different?” She says the dominance of male stories on the bigscreen is bad business. “It’s not serving the audience,” she explains. “People want to see good films. We should have equal access to the multiplexes.”

On a recent afternoon in Manhattan, lounging outside the Crosby Street Hotel with her hair in a ponytail and a shawl draped over her shoulders, Blanchett says she wasn’t convinced that “Carol” would ever make it to theaters. “It was so hard,” she recalls. “Midrange films with women at the center are tricky to finance. There are a lot of people laboring under the misapprehension that people don’t want to see them, which isn’t true.” And while the franchise-obsessed movie industry covets young male audiences above all else, it can no longer ignore female moviegoers — who account for at least half of ticket sales each year.

The Academy Award-winning actress reveals what it was like working on her latest film Cinderella

Cate Blanchett stars as the Stepmother in Disney’s upcoming Cinderella, a live action retelling of the classic fairytale.

The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh and hits NZ theatres on March 26, with a star-studded cast that includes Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden and Lily James as Cinderella herself!

Check out what Cate had to say about filming, her co-stars and her ‘wicked’ character:

Q. Tell us what drew you to the project.

Cate: I love fairy tales, and “Cinderella” in particular, because they deal with complex issues that face children. So many stories that children are told now make them feel like they are heroes who can overcome anything and that the world is a perfect place. The timeless fairy tales, like “Cinderella,” tell us that the world can be a nasty place and require a good deal of courage and resilience to survive. This is a story where kindness is a super power, which is something Ken Branagh and I talked about early on that I found really exciting. Plus, I have three boys so I’m aware of all the films out there that have male superheroes at the fore, so I was thrilled to be part of the telling of a female-centric story.

Cate Blanchett revealed to the Daily Mail that after starring in her husband Andrew Upton’s adaptation of Chekhov’s THE PRESENT at the Sydney Theatre Company this August, she wants to take the production on tour to the U.S. and London.

Nothing has been made official, but BroadwayWorld will keep you updated as we learn more!

Sydney Theatre Company’s official description of the play reads, “Variously known as Wild Honey, Fatherlessness, Play without Title and Platonov, Anton Chekhov’s first play was unknown at all until it was discovered in 1920 in a safety-deposit box 16 years after the playwright’s death. Roughly four hours of existing theatrical material revolving around Chekhovian tropes of lust, longing, vodka and shattered dreams, imbued with the familiar warmth, humour and insight, will be distilled into a new play by Andrew Upton, entitled The Present. All the drama is fuelled by near-nuclear collision of two soul mates, Mikhail Platonov (Richard Roxburgh) and Anna Petrovna (Cate Blanchett). Having last played opposite each other on stage in STC’s much-loved production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, adapted by Upton, these two actors will dig out the sorrow, the heartache and the hilarious tragedy of love foiled for all the wrong reasons – money not the least of them. STC welcomes Irish director John Crowley, renowned for his work on the West End and Broadway, making his Australian debut.”

Academy Award winner Blanchett can be seen on the big screen in Kenneth Branagh’s CINDERELLA, as well as the upcoming films CAROL and TRUTH. She also recently appeared off-Broadway in THE MAIDS. Among her other recent stage credits are BIG AND SMALL, UNCLE VANYA, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, THE WAR OF THE ROSES, HEDDA GABLER and more. [Source]
